Medium Voltage Switchgear Supply and Demand

In the article, the authors, Saqib Saeed, CPO & Abdullah Kamran, Analyst at PTR Inc. elucidates that medium voltage (MV) switchgear, operating between 1 kV and 42 kV, is essential for controlling, protecting, and isolating electrical equipment. Valued at approximately $2 billion, the US MV switchgear market is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.5% through 2030. This growth is driven by factors such as grid modernization, the expansion of data centers, and technological advancements. Programs like GRIP and the Grid Innovation Program are investing in underground infrastructure to enhance grid resilience against weather-related disruptions, increasing demand for underground MV switchgear. Additionally, the booming data center sector, spurred by advancements in AI and cloud computing, is significantly contributing to market growth. The MV switchgear segment for data centers is expected to grow at a CAGR of 16% from 2023 to 2030 due to the critical need for reliable power systems.

Technological shifts are also influencing the market, with a transition from Air-Insulated Switchgear (AIS) to Gas-Insulated Switchgear (GIS) and Solid Insulated Switchgear (SIS), particularly for underground applications. SIS is expected to surpass GIS in market share because of its superior reliability for such installations. The market has faced challenges with extended lead times, worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic, which increased average lead times to 52 weeks. Despite improvements, lead times remain longer than pre-pandemic levels, averaging 26 to 32 weeks. In response, manufacturers like Vertiv and Schneider Electric are expanding production capacities to address rising demand and alleviate supply chain issues. Overall, the US MV switchgear market is set to grow, driven by increased needs for grid resilience, data center expansion, and technological advancements.
