From Oil to Electrons: The Surging Electromobility Market in the MENA Region

The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is on the brink of significant progress in electric vehicle (EV) technology and charging infrastructure, driven by government policies promoting sustainable transportation. The UAE and Saudi Arabia are at the forefront, collaborating with private and public sectors to boost EV supply and expand charging networks. Both countries have introduced subsidies and reduced tariffs to accelerate EV adoption. Automakers like GM, Ford, and Chinese brands such as Zeekr and BYD are also entering the MENA market, highlighting the region’s growing focus on clean transportation. The UAE, in particular, has made substantial progress, with initiatives like the EV Green Charger and plans to increase charging stations to over 1,000 by 2025, followed by further expansions through 2030.

Other MENA countries are also advancing their EV goals. Jordan’s tax cuts have led to surging EV sales, while Egypt is working on an ambitious strategy with local manufacturing and charging stations. Qatar is aiming for 100% electrification of public transport by 2030, and Israel plans to ban petrol and diesel cars by the same year.

The MENA region’s commitment to electric mobility is driven by both environmental concerns and the strategic need for economic diversification. Governments across the region are prioritizing renewable energy, clean transportation technologies, and energy diversification. Key business leaders and global players are collaborating to transform not only the EV and charging infrastructure sectors but also the broader energy industry. Significant developments are occurring in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, while Chinese companies are working with governments in Egypt and Qatar to enhance EV infrastructure. With robust initiatives and partnerships in place, the MENA region is well-positioned to lead the global shift toward cleaner, more sustainable transportation over the next decade, creating substantial growth opportunities in the process.
