Whitelee’s 50MW/50MWh storage colocation with wind enabing maximisation in revenue streams.

Whitelee is a 50MW/50MWh storage project, which is collocating liquid cooled lithium-ion batteries with the UK’s largest onshore windfarm, of 539MW, near Glasgow, Scotland. Plans for the battery were approved by the Scottish government in June 2019, and inverter maker Ingeteam was announced as the power electronics technology provider in July 2020, while the batteries used are lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry cells from Chinese manufacturer CATL. The £21 million (US$29.35 million) project will take advantage of the grid connection already at the site and will be used for a number of different applications, with its main use to be as a back-up for the Whitelee wind farm to allow it to better manage the energy delivered to the grid. ScottishPower unveiled a £2 billion investment programme in 2019, targeting large-scale battery storage and EV charging. It also revealed a hybrid power strategy for the UK and Ireland, combining solar and battery storage with wind on both existing and new sites.
