PTR’s senior analyst Qutab Baig wrote a whitepaper for Middle East Energy on the importance of FACTS devices in enabling renewable energy transition and ensuring grid stability against intermittent generation. The paper discusses rising demand for FACTS devices in the Middle East and highlights STATCOMS and Synchronous Condensers as desirable technologies for grid operators and renewable developers. Additionally, alternative solutions like energy storage projects are emerging as replacements for FACTS devices, especially for renewable applications. The paper suggests hydrogen as a dynamic intermittent energy storage source for reactive power compensation systems in the region.
