Siemens Energy to install 22 oil-immersed distribution transformers at offshore wind farm in China

by Mar 10, 2021

Siemens Energy has been awarded a contract to install 22 units of distribution transformers at China’s first commercial 66 kilovolts (kV) offshore wind farm, Yuhuan Offshore Wind Power Project Phase 1, located in Taizhou, Zhejiang Province, southeastern China. With an installed capacity of 300 MW, this project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2021. It will be China’s first 66 kV offshore wind farm that will contribute to China’s goal of carbon neutrality by 2060. These compact and lightweight transformers will be installed in the tower base of the 7MW wind turbines provided by Dongfang Wind Power and will be filled with biodegradable synthetic ester insulating oil instead of conventional mineral oil, which is particularly environmentally friendly and fire safe.
Growing demand for wind energy has led to the development of increasingly stronger wind turbines with a power rating of more than 10 MWs, requiring higher voltage levels and innovative power transmission technologies. To date, Siemens Energy has installed more than 2,500 units of the ester fluid immersed distribution transformers in wind offshore applications worldwide.
