Iberdrola’s strategic investment plan is supported by innovation initiatives aimed at decarbonising the energy mix, increasing its resilience and consolidating the company’s leadership in renewable energy, smart grids, efficient storage and clean technologies. Working towards its goal, the group boasts an emission-free production of 79 % at the close of the First Quarter 2021, it is also committed to becoming carbon neutral in Europe by 2030, and globally by 2050.
Spanish renewables giant Iberdrola and Mitsubishi Power, a unit of Japanese industrial conglomerate Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, have formed an alliance to decarbonise industry through the joint development of green hydrogen plants, battery storage system and electrified heat production facilities around the world.
As a first step of a cooperation agreement signed, the two companies will create teams to identify opportunities for large-scale renewables generation and storage projects for industry.
In other news; Working towards the carbon-neutrality goal Iberdrola upgrades its Substations in Murcia, Spain. As part of the project, Hitachi ABB Power Grids will install its EconiQ high-voltage breakers in the southern region of Murcia. This is the first time this type of breakers will be installed in Spain, according to a Hitachi ABB Power Grids release.
The 72.5KV and 145KV EconiQLive tank breakers are expected to help Iberdrola to increase the provision of clean energy to support sustainable agricultural practices in Murcia. These circuit breakers use carbon dioxide (CO2) as an insulation gas mixture instead of sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) and will reduce CO2 equivalent emissions throughout the total lifecycle. SF6 has been the norm in the electrical industry for decades, however, it is a greenhouse gas.
Iberdrola says it believes that in addition to investing in grid upgrades and renewables, putting more focus on mechanisms such as energy flexibility and efficient energy storage will help the company meet its goal of 65% of electricity generation from renewables by 2030 and 85% in 2050.
