TDI, an American project develop, has chosen Hitachi Energy to deploy voltage source converters (VSC) for CHPE HVDC interconnection. The 1,250 MW interconnection will enable the transmission of hydropower generation over 600 km via underground cables from Québec, Canada to New York, USA at a voltage level of 400 KV DC. NKT and Kiewit are also participating in the development of CHPE as cable suppliers and an EPC for civil works, respectively. This interconnector is a major green infrastructure project that will help to transform New York’s power grid and will support the state’s energy transition target of achieving 70% of the generation from renewables by 2030. Furthermore, USA have shown strong commitment towards energy transition with the aim to achieve carbon free electricity sector by 2035. In this regard, USA plans to take the offshore wind and utility scale solar generation to nearly 30 GW and 300 GW by 2030, respectively. Currently, the USA projects the HVDC deployments of more than 30 GW by 2030, mostly planned to transmit electric power from renewable energy resources to load centers, and this figure is likely to rise in the future years as utility solar, hydro power, and offshore wind power generation will expand. Regarding regional market competitors, Hitachi Energy and Siemens Energy have established significant presence in the region, particularly in USA, and are currently working on the deployment of two (1 GW) and three (4 GW) HVDC transmission projects, respectively, that are expected to be completed by 2025.Hitachi Energy, a worldwide technology leader facilitating a sustainable energy transition, has already secured converter deployment contracts for three large scale HVDC projects in addition to CHPE in 2021, including Hornsea 3 (2,850 MW), Kudus-Aarey HVDC (Mumbai-Maharashtra) (1,000 MW), and SuedLink DC4 (2,000 MW).
