Pakistan has made a major step to ensure energy independence by utilizing its own energy resources in the form of the Thar-Block 1 project. Led by power generation equipment manufacturer, Shanghai Electric, the project comprises of two power plant with a capacity of 1.320 MW to provide to the National Grid. The coal mine extends over 9000 km in the Thar Desert which is located in south eastern part of the Sindh province. Hitachi ABB has agreed to provide a 550 kV GIS to the project and the power plants are expected to be functional by 2022 The GIS will serve to be an important component for this major energy project as part of China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
