Automotive giant Volkswagen has announced to form a joint venture (JV) with Enel X, the Enel’s Group advanced energy solutions subsidiary, to install 3000 high power chargers in Italy. The JV will operate as a charge point operator (CPO) and will own and deploy the high power charging(HPC) network between 2021 to 2025 at 700 locations across the country. The 3000 charge points will have capacity of up to 350 kW each and will be able to reduce range anxiety for EV drivers from the North to the South of the Peninsula. The JV will focus on areas like city centers, main roads used by commuters and main extra urban roads. The HPC Network will be available to different kinds of EVs from all manufacturers and will also be interoperable to different Mobility Service Providers. The JV will be supported by Enel X with service contracts to make its e-mobility technology and expertise available for start-up phase. This project comes as part of the German automotive company’s bigger electrification plan which intends to set up a total of: • 18,000 HPC in Europe • 10,000 HPC in USA & Canada ( 1800 Electrify America/Electrify Canada stations) • 17,000 HPC in China This adds up to a total of 45,000 high power chargers which will likely make a huge difference in the e-mobility market. VW Group is currently in the process of transitioning from ICEs to zero-emission cars but in addition to that, projects like these show their serious efforts in providing their customers with a decent fast charging network.
