A strategic partnership has been established between Switch Mobility (A next-generation electric vehicle UK based company) and Chalo (the top transport technology company in India) to deploy 5,000 electric buses across the country. As part of the supply arrangement, Switch will supply variants of its recently launched EiV12 standard for inter-city/intra-city/staff/school and EiV12 ultra low entry which is for intra-city/staff/tarmac applications. These are produced at the company’s manufacturing hubs in India and the UK. India employs buses for 48% of daily transportation, however there are only 3 buses per 10,000 people. Switch mobility hopes to revolutionize urban transportation in India. This substantial alliance of 5000 electric buses will undoubtedly increase accessibility to convenient, hassle-free, affordable, and environment friendly transportation options. Chalo completed an initiative to introduce 1,000 new buses to three cities (Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru) in 2021 and now they are about to collaborate with Switch Mobility on a scale that is five times larger.
As a part of their collaboration, Switch and Chalo will jointly invest and Chalo will deploy technology solutions to its consumer such as the Chalo App and the Chalo Card which provide conveniences like real-time bus tracking, digital tickets, and travel plans and also determine routes, frequency, schedules, and fares. Switch’s responsibilities include the supply and maintenance of the electric buses. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed in this regard for a first term of three years.
Overall, the PTR database indicates that the Indian e-bus market is expanding, and this Chalo and Switch Mobility initiative will assist in achieving the goal of electrifying buses in India. Following the completion of this project, other companies will show interest in the Indian BEV bus market.
