Circontrol launches 400 kW fast chargers in Madrid

by Sep 9, 2022

Spanish charging station maker Circontrol has launched its first 400 kW chargers. Circontrol has provided the Canalejas 360 charging hub in Madrid with four state-of-the-art 400 kW ultra-fast chargers, four 200 kW chargers and another four 50 kW charging stations, a total of twelve fast chargers. The urban charging hub will provide 2.5 megawatts of fast charging for electric vehicle drivers in Madrid and the surrounding area.

Public transport operator Empresa Municipal de Transportes de Madrid (EMT) is running the Canalejas 360 charging hub. EMT says this will be one of the largest indoor charging hubs in Europe. Circontrol is the sole supplier of charging stations to EMT at this location. The ultra-rapid chargers are of type Raption 400. Circontrol had faced supply line issues, like many other manufacturers over the last year but had also opened a new testing laboratory in Barcelona in September last year. Since then, the company has re-tooled to supply fast-charging stations and has launched several products not represented at the new charging location, including the Raption 150 Compact, which features 150 kW of power, and the Raption 350 HPC, which has a capacity of up to 350 kW.

Electric vehicle manufacturers are shifting to 800 V architectures in order to better compete with combustion vehicles. Developments to boost the electrical systems of battery-driven vehicles to 800-volts from the current industry standard of 400 volts could be the breakthrough that finally allows electric vehicles to move to the next level. Charging times can be greatly reduced when using fast chargers capable of working at up to 350-400 kilowatts.

In order to keep pace with market demands of more powerful and fast chargers, EVSE manufacturers are working towards releasing ultra-fast chargers with capacities above 350 kW. Last year, ABB broke the 350 kW barrier and introduced the Terra 360 kW charger. Since then, multiple Chinese EVSE manufacturers have launched ultra-fast chargers with capacities above 400 kW. In May of 2022, Alpitronic also revealed its 400 kW charger, expected to enter the market by the end of this year. The new High Power Charger HYC400 will be eligible for use in Germany’s planned ‘Deutschlandnetz’ (German network).
